Ardagh Group History

History: This Diocese appears to have been founded either by St Patrick, or by his disciple and nephew, St Mel.  Mel, a Briton, was Bishop and Abbott by 454 AD.   In the Anglican Church, the See was held by the Bishops of Kilmore from 1604 to 1633 and from 1661 to 1751.  It then passed to the Archbishops of Tuam until 1839, when it was formally united to the Diocese of Kilmore.   In the Roman Catholic Church this diocese is united with the Diocese of Clonmacnoise.   Some remains of the Old Cathedral are still visible behind the present church.
