This group of parishes is made up of five churches - Kilcommick, Tashinny, Ardagh, Shrule and Moydow . They are all located in the south of County Longford.

St. George's, Kilcommick

Location: This church is located at the south end of the village of Keenagh, seven miles south of Longford and six miles north of Ballymahon on the road to Athlone.

Tashinny Parish Church

Location: This Church is located in the village of Tashinny, on the secondary road from Ballymahon to Mullingar. The village is a mile from the N55 (Edgeworthstown to Ballymahon) road, about twelve miles from Longford town.
The church was erected in the 1600s by the Annelly family of Tenelick, to whom there is a striking Italian monument inside the building.  A tombstone in the aisle commemorates Pierce Pettit.

St Patrick's Church, Ardagh

Location: St Patrick's is located in the picturesque village of Ardagh, a frequent winner of the national Tidy Towns Competition.  Ardagh is a very old ecclesiastical site and, after Armagh is the oldest Irish Diocese. Its history is here.  The interior of the ruined Cathedral is the burial place of the last Baronet of Ardagh, Sir George Ralph Fetherstone, whose family founded the village.

St Catherine's Church, Shrule

Location: This church is situated in the middle of Ballymahon town, in the South of County Longford, on the N55 road from Edgeworthstown to Athlone. The central aisle of the present building was built circa 1800 and was enlarged in 1824 by the addition of side aisles, a porch, a belltower and a spire.
It is thought that Oliver Goldsmith (1730-74), the well-known poet who lived near Ballymahon, worshipped in this church during his youth.

Moydow Parish Church

Location: This church was closed in 1987 and is no longer used for public worship.  It is located six miles to the south of Longford town on the road that begins near to the Longford Slashers  football club.
The church was built in 1765 and is reputed to be one of the oldest surviving in the county.   The earliest inscription in the surrounding graveyard is dated 1640.

 

 

Parish Information

This group of parishes has a population of about 150 Anglicans. There is a 2–teacher school in Tashinny village.
There is a Hall in Keenagh, known as "The Lecture Hall", which holds various parish meetings and activities including monthly Whist Drives and a Table-Tennis Club.  The Badminton Club meets in Ardagh Community Centre. Some of the younger people of the parishes are members of the Boys' Brigade and Girls' Friendly Society which meet in Longford town.
